Overview
GitLab is seeking a Staff Backend Engineer (Ruby on Rails/AI) for a remote role in the United Kingdom. This position will involve shaping and scaling the core infrastructure behind GitLab CI, with a focus on integrating AI into CI/CD workflows.
Key Responsibilities
- Shape and scale GitLab CI backend infrastructure for improved performance, reliability, and usability.
- Design and implement AI-powered features for Agentic CI, including such agents and workflows.
- Define success metrics for AI in CI, ensuring that the team learns and iterates effectively.
- Build instrumentation and observability for trust-worthy AI-assisted CI in production.
- Drive measurable performance improvements across CI systems through experimentation and data validation.
- Write secure, well-tested, maintainable Ruby on Rails code, enhancing existing features.
- Lead cross-functional technical work with Engineering, Product, and UX teams.
- Share standards, patterns, and learnings with fellow engineers to promote responsible AI integration.
Requirements
- Advanced proficiency with Ruby and Ruby on Rails.
- Strong PostgreSQL skills, including data modeling and query tuning.
- Experience building, running, and debugging high-traffic production systems.
- Practical experience with AI-powered backend features and integrations.
- Data-driven engineering approach with strong metrics definition and measurement skills.
- Familiar with observability patterns and tools.
- Strong backend architecture and delivery practices.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills, especially in a remote environment.
