Overview

Thunderbird is expanding beyond email with Thunderbolt, an open-source AI client designed for organizations needing more control over their data. The company seeks a Staff Designer to shape the product experience for Thunderbolt as it transitions from early development into enterprise use cases.

Key Responsibilities

• Build functional prototypes and product experiments directly in the Thunderbolt codebase.
• Translate product ideas, user workflows, partner feedback, and enterprise needs into usable product experiences.
• Help define interaction patterns for AI-powered chat, search, research, and workflow automation.
• Use AI tools to accelerate prototyping and implementation while ensuring usability and security.
• Collaborate with product, design, and engineering teams to explore and refine product direction.
• Contribute production-quality front-end code as appropriate.
• Improve usability, accessibility, and overall user experience of Thunderbolt.
• Develop reusable components and design system elements to aid the broader team.

Requirements

• 10+ years of relevant experience in design engineering, UX engineering, product design, or a related field.
• Strong front-end engineering skills with modern JavaScript or TypeScript.
• Experience with AI-enabled product experiences, emphasizing user trust and oversight.
• Ability to translate ambiguous concepts into usable workflows and prototypes.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills with cross-functional teams.
• Portfolio demonstrating design execution and product experience improvements.
• Practical awareness of AI, privacy, security, and regulatory considerations.
