Overview

GitLab’s Forward Deployed Engineering team is a field-situated product engineering function focused on strategic customer outcomes, artificial intelligence (AI) adoption, and direct contributions to GitLab’s product. This position as a Staff Forward Deployed Engineer involves close collaboration with customers while maintaining the technical standards and discipline of a Staff-level product engineer.

Key Responsibilities

• Contribute production-quality code to GitLab’s product and adjacent systems.
• Develop bug fixes, features, integrations, tooling, and performance improvements based on strategic customer needs.
• Work within GitLab’s engineering processes, including issue discovery, merge request creation, and documentation.
• Engage with strategically important customers when adoption or retention is at risk.
• Diagnose complex problems and coordinate with multiple teams to drive resolution.
• Foster AI adoption and identify blockers related to governance and security.
• Create reusable guidance and technical narratives for the industry.

Requirements

• Staff-level experience with complex production software systems.
• Experience with high standards for testing, maintainability, and performance.
• Strong proficiency in Ruby on Rails or Go.
• Experience with AI-assisted software development and strategic customer engagement.
• Strong written communication skills and the ability to create technical narratives.
• Familiarity with DevSecOps workflows, Git, and CI/CD practices.

Salary

The base salary range for this role’s listed level is $254,000 — $297,000 USD.
