Staff Software Engineer - Fraud @Mercury

Overview

The role involves contributing as a Staff Software Engineer at Mercury, a fintech company focused on building intelligent systems that enhance business banking experiences. The engineering teams guide numerous business applications through their systems, balancing speed and safety.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the architecture, implementation, and long-term roadmap for core systems supporting various fraud prevention use cases.
• Own the end-to-end delivery of large cross-functional projects, translating ambiguous problems into strategy and execution.
• Design, build, and operate highly available, low-latency backend systems for real-time fraud prevention scoring and decisioning.
• Collaborate with Data Science and ML teams to productionize models and build reliable ML data pipelines.
• Establish and promote engineering best practices, review designs, and ensure engineering quality.
• Mentor engineers and share technical direction through documentation, meetings, and 1:1s.
• Navigate and influence multiple stakeholders, aligning teams and resolving cross-team issues independently.

Requirements

• 7-10+ years of software development experience with a strong backend focus.
• Experience as a technical lead making impactful architectural decisions.
• Product-minded with experience in building and shipping reliable products.
• Able to drive discussions in areas with ambiguous ownership, with a strong sense of empathy.
• Proactive in mentoring coworkers and sharing knowledge.
• Experience in fintech, fraud systems, or risk domains is a strong advantage.
• Knowledge of or eagerness to learn Haskell.

Benefits

The total rewards package includes a competitive base salary, equity (stock options/RSUs), and benefits. Target new hire base salary ranges are $200,700 — $298,800 USD for US employees and $189,700 — $282,400 CAD for Canadian employees.

Remote within Canada or the United States, or based in San Francisco, CA, New York, NY, or Portland, OR.
