Overview
The Staff Backend Engineer will join GitLab's Observability, Monitoring, and Integrations team, playing a critical role in managing observability, monitoring, and detection for systems that support customer purchasing and usage of GitLab. They will set the technical direction for telemetry, detection, and reconciliation tooling related to billing and data anomalies across various platforms.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, build, and operate observability across the Monetization stack using tools like Prometheus and Grafana.
- Implement automated detection for billing, data, and event anomalies, routing alerts to responsible feature teams.
- Develop reconciliation and data integrity checks across usage and billing pipelines.
- Define and track service level objectives and indicators, and participate in incident response to enhance system reliability.
- Utilize AI and machine learning techniques to predict system anomalies and accelerate issue resolution.
- Review and provide feedback on merge requests from other engineers.
- Collaborate with various teams to transform operational needs into reliable tooling.
Requirements
- Professional experience with Ruby on Rails, especially in building applications like CustomersDot.
- Experience in site reliability or observability engineering, encompassing monitoring, alerting, and incident response.
- Ability to set technical direction for observability, reliability, or detection efforts.
- Experience in building anomaly detection and monitoring tools.
- Familiarity with observability tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, and OpenTelemetry.
- Exposure to analytical data stores and event-streaming pipelines, such as ClickHouse and NATS JetStream.
- Experience in managing projects from concept to production, with effective communication skills.
- Working knowledge of Python is a plus, particularly for anomaly detection and data work.
